Instructions for WebQuest Lessons
The
WebQuest was developed by Bernie Dodge at San Diego State University as, “inquiry-oriented lesson format in which
most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web.”
The
purpose of the WebQuests on this site is to help the adult literacy learners in
three different areas, health literacy, family literacy, and workplace
literacy. Although these WebQuests can be used by the learner independently,
working together will yield the best results. The following points explain how
the learners can benefit from these WebQuests:
- Adult
Learners will learn how to navigate the internet. They will learn how and when
to click links within a website, how to use the mouse, how to go back and forward
within a website. Because these WebQuests provide audio as well as visual
support, the learners will be able to successfully learn how to gather the
information they need.
- Adult learners will
learn about three separate topics while learning to use the internet. They will
learn about Health Literacy, Family Literacy, and Workplace Literacy.
Additionally, they will learn how to join a Yahoo Group to continue talking
about what they learned while using the internet as a resource.
- Adult Learners will
learn to navigate the internet with a critical eye. It is important that they
articulate either verbally or in writing about what they liked and did not like
about each site they visited. Upon completion they should have an idea about
who sponsored the website and whether or not it was credible. The WebQuests are
designed to not only aide internet skills but comprehension and critical
thinking as well. Reading on the internet does require a new set of sub skills
for comprehension.
Questions to ask
your learner during the WebQuest:
- Do you know
how to get back to the home page?
- Are you interested
in the topic?
- Do you like this
website? Why? Why Not?
- What else would
like to know about this topic that this website did not cover?
- What words can you
use to search for a new website on a particular topic?
Please refer to
the list of websites provided for more information about the three separate
topics and the structure of WebQuests.
